Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

Net Zero target: 2050
Harry Barker Properties is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

This target is set in alignment with the SBTi’s corporate Net Zero standard.

Baseline Emissions

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.estimated.

Additional details relating to baseline emissions

Harry Parker Properties’ emissions reporting began in the 2024 reporting year. This report covers materially relevant Scope 1, 2 and 3 categories of the GHG Protocol using the operational control reporting approach, based on an organisational boundary of HBP and sister entity, HBP Enterprises. A full list of included and excluded emissions categories under the GHG Protocol are listed at the end of this report.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions in our baseline year were generated by site electricity and gas usage, fuel usage in our vehicles, alongside fuel usage by plant at both HBP sites and customer sites in 2024. Gas heating at our main site is largely used by a separate tenant in one of our buildings, but is included in this footprint under the operational control approach.

Downstream transportation is not applicable to our organisation because all sold products are transported in our vehicles, are therefore included in our Scope 1 emissions

To better reflect our real-world environmental impact, we have used life cycle emission factors for Scope 3 activities wherever possible.

Several Scope 3 categories (Purchased Goods and Services, Capital Goods and Upstream Transport) were calculated using a spend-based methodology in 2024. We are committed to continuous improvement in our emissions data, and recalculation of our base year will be implemented in future reporting periods if necessary to maintain an effective base year comparison.

Emissions Reduction Target

Harry Barker Properties has committed to a long-term target of achieving net zero by 2050

In practice, this equates to a 90% absolute reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2050 from our 2024 baseline. The remaining 10% of emissions will be balanced by emissions removals to achieve net zero.

To ensure we make tangible, science-based and continuous progress towards our long-term target, we have also adopted the following carbon reduction target:

  • 42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030 from our 2024 base.

Our annual emissions reduction targets are set out in the chart below.

Carbon Reduction Targets

Our targets commit us to a decrease in total scope 1 and 2 emissions over the next six years to 783 tCO2e, a reduction of 42% against our baseline year.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Harry Barker Properties is committed to taking action to bring down our emissions in-line with our targets. A materiality analysis of our 2024 emissions shows that our impact was overwhelmingly caused by the carbon embodied in our purchased goods and services, as shown by the chart below:

Current & Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
Waste Reclamation

As part of our operations, we transform what is previously un-usable construction waste into viable product, whilst simultaneously preventing usable material being sent to landfill, and thereby mitigating any adverse environmental actions this can cause.

Using our onsite wash plant, we screen and wash excavated waste, which is then processed into various gradings of aggregates and sands. These extracted resources are then separated into usable materials for future projects. Any other waste is pressed into a stable, non leachable and inert filter cake. This is currently sent to landfill, yet we are actively seeking end of waste classification to allow for this material to be similarly re-used, in line with our circular economy principles.

The results of our actions enable us to make a carbon reduction of 95% in comparison to sending all waste to landfill. Within the reporting period, these actions prevented 1,900 tCO2e of impact.

ISO 14001

Prior to this reporting period, we developed and implemented an environmental management system, accredited to the ISO 14001 framework. This has enabled us to embed environmental management within our operations, with the plan, do, check, act cycle ensuring continuous improvement across our environmental impacts.

Future Carbon Reduction Initiatives
Embodied Carbon Calculations

Given the high environmental impact of the construction sector, we are exploring strategies to fully capture the embodied carbon of the projects we lead. As was highlighted in our audit, the highest area of impact in our operations are our purchased goods and services, with the goods element outweighing the services.

As such, we are beginning a process to work with suppliers to collate more accurate information on the products we procure, to allow for both an increase in the accuracy of our footprint, alongside allowing us to target improvements on high carbon products, favouring more environmentally friendly alternatives wherever possible.

Van Electrification

Whilst not currently feasible for our HGVs, we are exploring the gradual transition of our vans to electric alternatives, to reduce the impact per mile by 70%. These decisions are being made at the end of our current fleet's operational life.

On-site Energy Efficiency

Whilst the needs of our site has lead to a need of constant heating, we are exploring having an energy efficiency audit on our buildings, to identity opportunities for improvement and potential opportunities to improve the environmental performance of our buildings.

Alternative Fuels

Our fuel usage (diesel) in our company fleet and plant equipment is responsible for 39% of our annual emissions. As the electrification of heavy plant equipment, and of HGVs is still in its infancy, over the medium term we are exploring the usage of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, or similar bio-diesels as a drop in fuel replacement. As this has an 80% lower impact than fossil fuels, a potential 50/50 switch to HVO at our Greenscoe site would allow for a 200tCO2e reduction annually.

Efficient Driving Training

We are further exploring offering further training to our drivers, to support efficient driving and thereby lower the impact of transport and logistics. This has been demonstrated to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 5%.
